“The systematic development of the deep down quality of unflinching courage is one of the fundamental requirements for leadership in any field. Fear, or the lack of courage is more responsible for failure in management, and in life, than any other factor. It is always fear that causes people to hold back, to sell themselves short, to settle for far less than they are capable of!” — Brian Tracy
What are the qualities of a leader? What characteristics are integral to those who rise to the challenge of leading – whether it be a company, a nation, or even oneself?
As leaders, it’s important that we take time to remember not only what we contribute, but also how we contribute. What does it take to put ourselves out there with our big, bold message? What does it take to assure those we lead that we are there to support them no matter what? How can we show up as our most authentic self so our energies are focused and aligned in a way that can see us through from a strong start to a strong finish? For starters, it takes courage!
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, “courage implies firmness of mind and will.” The actual word is derived from the Latin word for “heart.” Courage is about leading from your heart. It’s about being centered at your core — with your heart literally supplying you with the essence you need to live.
When you lead from the heart, you’re all in. You’re ready to face whatever opposition, challenge or hardship lay ahead. You’re ready to stand strong and stay the course no matter what. You are focused, determined and on purpose.
How do you think courage influences your ability to be a great leader? Can you feel the difference when you’re leading from a place of courage and when you are not? Do you see a difference in your receptivity from your team? How about in the results that are achieved? What can you learn about yourself that can help you be a courageous leader going forward? Feel free to share your feedback in the comments below.
To Your Success!
